Round-Up
Here's some highlights:
* Went to Buck's Birthday Bash. Had a great time. It was cool how every time Buck got a phone call from a country music artist, wishing him happy birthday, they would had him a mike so he could talk to them over the sound system in the Crystal Palace. One of the Crystal Palace staff would stand there with a piece of paper with "GEORGE JONES" written in the biggest letters possible so Buck would know who he was on the phone with.
* Other fascinating things I found out that night -- country singer Brad Paisley is handsome, but not very tall. Dwight Yoakam is undeniable cool and Raul Malo of the Mavericks has a fantastic voice.* I interviewed Mike Ness of legendary punk rock act Social Distortion today. The story will be out next Wednesday. Ness was great to chat with and gave me lots of great quotes about the mainstreaming of punk culture and his return to the stage and studio after the death of his friend and co-founder of Social Distortion Dennis Danell. Ness talked about how Danell took him to some of his first big punk and new wave shows in the late 70s. Social Distortion will be playing Stramler Park next week.
* This Friday's entertainment section is going to feature local country-blues musician Monty Byrom. Monty hit it big as a songwriter in the 80s and later with his band Big House in 1997. Big House broke up around 2000, but Monty and Big House members Ron Mitchell and Tanner Byrom have started playing regular gigs again at Fishlips (on 18th Street and Chester Ave. next door to the Goodwill). He's there every Friday putting on a full-length show. You can read all about Monty, Big House and their adventures in country music in Friday's Eye on Entertainment.

hi, db! ok, i don't know how to get in here unless i'm "anonymous," which i'm used to from blackboard days. i am a certain female who used to run that little paperette, so hopefully you now know who this is! i think your blog is developing a bit like mine was on our website -- you can't truly blog HONESTLY due to "standing in the community"!! i find that to be a bummer myself. if you have a candid blog, i hope you'll send me the link c/o the bksfld blackboard website (http://theblackboard.home.att.net) !! i would love to read it. though i think you are too busy, really, to blog much. but then i can tell you what i really think about a thing or two, as well, like the party you mention here (yes, raul malo is the GREATEST, or one of them, anyhow. others are just creepy, though.).
i am emailing to tell you our website crashed, but i sent the guys the "links" links best i could remember, and added your blog, so we are linked to you now (once the site is rebuilt, that is).
also, re our old bass player, whom i know you thought much of, i tried to make it as amicable a split as earthly possible. i don't know what the old gossip mill is saying, if anything. but if you want to know more, please email me & i can fill you in on the gory details. i think you remember, maybe, that when you interviewed us months back, the old bass player didn't show up. that will give you a clue why i was after months and months forced to "let him go" (i really did not want to, but people will not conform to my expectations of them. it continues to be a huge bummer!) i wish him the best, but oh well. c'est la vie. hope you are getting to sing these days & take it easy & happy wkend, etc.
