Why is it that "pulchritude" sounds like something that smells bad?

I'm always amazed at how "un" sexy the English language can be at times. Yeah. I thought it sounded like a fungi the first time I read it in a story describing a Hollywood actress. I'm all, "Why would they say that about Natalie Portman?"
