Um ... The Wordies?

Yo, thespians, thespian lovers and thespian wannabes, the comment thread on the Wordies is getting OUT OF CONTROL! You're killing Danielle Belton Online with the triple, quadruple postings. I just wanted you to try to sway my opinion, not kick its ass.

So, like, I'm starting a WORDIES discussion thread and you can discuss the Wordies in the comment area ON THIS ENTRY!

But just do "slugfest, my show is the best," LL Cool J style rants, yo? Don't feel like you have to get down on the get down on every ... little ... thing. The V-Day folks seems to know the drill. Now everyone else RUMBLE, young man (or woman), RUMBLE!

Okay I think the best show of the year was "Of Mice and Men." Just a killer cast doing a great job. My only problem with it was everyone's line delilvery was so fast. It appears the director never really spent time in the midwest. I saw a lot of other good shows just that was the one with the most consistent cast. Usually you get a show, even in LA, with one or two standouts and a group of actors you wonder how they got there. "Mice" had that inverted.

    When your vagina speaks, listen!
No matter what the other fakers portray,
the Vagina Monologues was the year's best play!
With a cast of many who made us think,
The vaginas were happy, angry and pink,
thoughtful, orgasmic, and scorching hot it seems,
Julia's portrayal of the various orgasms could make a abstinent woman scream!
But the lady who made us laugh and cry, gave a performance that made us say "Oh my, oh my."
That Colette, what a performer, what a gem, what a find,
I was left wondering if the vagina she talked about was hers or mine?
Now, I'm not a rapper, jazz is my gig
With a production like the Monologues, these ladies could be really BIG!
    Let's look at the facts
    not the selfish, repetitive BLOGS,
see the quality of the performer
not their name, just their job.

I vote for Colette and Ashley, The Empty Space and the rest of the VM crew (musicians, stage & sound, costumes & makeup), when you decide awards, I hope you will too.

    Thanks Danielle!

Danielle... you make the call. You saw all the shows and as you've already experienced, people are going to be trying to stack the deck in their favor with multiple voting. And most of them didn't see any of the other shows.

If I have to make mention of the shows on your list that I would give bids to, top o' the list is The Empty Space's production of "Angels in America". Most courageous show this year. Give it nods for direction, shared best actor nods for Wells and Sivesind, best actress for Hatzman, and if you have an ensemble category, they should win for that, as well as best production, best drama, best make up.

My favorite category is best production no one saw because I still can't fathom why no one saw A Few Good Men (what happened to 'support the troops'?) but to see it nominated was a joy (although I though Rikk Cheshire did an awesome job and I'm glad Doug got a nod).

I hate musicals so I have no opinion.

Best comedy... I guess I am biased in going with Sex, Lies, and the IRS (and much appreciation for recognizing the talents of Jason, Richie, and Alana).

Of course, I'm going with Hatikvah for best original... never saw the others, though, so, my opinion is invalid.

Thanks for the director nod, but if I'm basing this on the end result of a show I watched, I have to give it to Hal for Angels.

For breakthrough performance, my hat is off to Julia Heatherwick's in The Vagina Monologues... mamma mia, that woman is sexy and had something to say that I was going to listen to!

Original music... I missed Spider Baby but enjoyed the stylings of Ben, Stephen, and Smith in VM... although JC sounded a lot like something else to me... but I have a fondness for Richie's original theme song catching the sitcom spirit.

Ken and Greg's duet in Into the Woods was the only time I've enjoyed a moment in a musical so I would have to give them the prize in their category.

Best lighting? I am gonna be biased there, baby, and toot my own horn for A Few Good Men. The only show I didn't see out of the category was B&B... but you're telling me it was better? if you say so...

And while I like what was attempted with the set designs for Casablanca and SubUrbia, Into the Woods was a very lush set design and On the Verge a close second... didn't see Teatro Bizarro to make a comment on that one.

In the end, you go with your gut... so far in every review you've written you've called it right and if anyone complains... well, you know they will regardless.

    Peace out,
    Roger Mathey

Perhaps some of you did not read Danielle's counsel in the prologue of this blogger. She advised to 'rumble' for your show and explain why it or its performers should win the nominated award. This is not a politically correct, everyone was super-type of discussion. Truth is, I DID see several of the mentioned shows and STILL think that the Vagina Monologues was the best. MY FAVORITE. I don't have to see EVERY show in town to know superb directing, great dramatic performances and stunning sets, costumes, etc.

An Award is for the BEST of the BEST. EVERYONE does not win - only one in each category. And if people are too scared to speak up for their own work or the work of people they like, admire ... then SHAME on them. Why should I comment if none of their fans bother too. THe bottom line is personal preference. I do not have to mention every show nominated or even all the shows that I have attended to know my own preference. Besides, I don't know any of you (I don't think) or any of the performers (personally, anyway) so I have no vested interest in appeasing you. My vote, my choice.

BTW, I have seen several different versions of the Monologues from the SF Bay to LA, and frankly, Ashley Bretz' work was tops. She and her cast and crew deserves their nominations and awards. Although there were many characters in this show and others that I liked, the simple truth is they did not get nominated - for whatever reason. So, QUIT YOUR CRYING and vote for one of the nominees. I LOVED Colette Masala and Julia Heatherwick. I simply related to what Colette said a little better so she will get my vote. Cabaret has been one of my favorites since childhood. Doug Cheeseman is an outstanding performer as is Sheila McClure. Angels in America was better in the theater than on HBO. Steinbeck would be proud of the OF MICE AND MEN show. MY VOTE, MY CHOICE, MY REASONS! I LOVED the entire production.

Mentioning the backing of the production does not diminish the quality of the work. As stated above, I have seen the VM in other theaters in other cities and they ARE NOT all the same quality. I can say the same about renditions of Cabaret and Of Mice and Men and Angels in America. I LOVE the Arts and patronize local theaters throughout California (I travel a lot) whenever possible. Recognize that it is the local people behind the production that makes the show great - not corporate marketers or fancy ads. Instead of complaining about complaining, give these people their credit.

While I disagree that people should copy and paste multiple voteswithout real commentary, I personally found it quite amusing to read the comments. Please, however, comment and defend your votes. This is like an election. The popular vote still needs to explain its popularity. And just why are a few of you so ANGRY at these people for expressing their opinions? The Spotlight and The Empty Space are slugging it out because, just as they had passion for their work, they have passion for their recognition. That is something to be admired - not condescended upon. GOOD JOB TO THESE 2 GROUPS. Apparently, they got on the phone and rallied their supporters. I suspect this was Danielle's intent when deciding to open the voting to a forum such as this. This is better than most of the soap operas! If you do not like it, you can always log off. Meanwhile, I will keep reading to see what happens on the next episode of "As the Theater Turns ..."

**MR. ROGER, I DO NOT ADVOCATE VIOLENCE, SO I WILL DECLINE YOUR KIND OFFER. ANYONE WHO DOES NOT LIKE THIS OR ANY OF THE OTHER COMMENTARY, LOG OFF. EVERYONE ELSE, VOTE!

    MS. ME!!

    Danielle:
Obviously, this is your call. My only question is what good is a blogger if it's not to 'stack the deck; isn't that the purpose of opening up the commentary to so many people? People should leave their bias about others to themselves and just vote. I don't why you voted, just vote and defend yourself if need be. Just ry to be constructive in your commentary. You do not build good will by tearing down other performers and their shows. I think its great that so many VM and Cabaret & Angels fans and supporters are unafraid to do so. They have convinced me that they deserve recognition and support. While I see some obvious duplications, it seems that some take this thing to heart and are unafraid to at least make commentary to support their votes. This reminds me of the American Idol issue with not voting for your favorite singer and then getting mad because he/he was voted off for lack of votes. Stop crying and get online. I just wish some of the other shows would see this as a marketing opportunity - i.e. a chance to toot your own horn - and convince people that theirs is a production worthy of praise AND attendance. SPEAK UP - we are waiting.
