Fashion, Rock 'n' Roll and David Zent gone from the Gaslight Melodrama

An afternoon stroll ... for fashion.

It's a day of fashion between fake girlfriend Wyndi (who's a married college student) and fake boyfriend Mike (who's real girlfriend was there the whole shoot). But don't they look so cute together! (Photo by John Harte, The Californian)

My fall fashion spread, with concepts and outfits picked by aspiring fashion maestro (and Casablanca DJ) Luis!, is slated to run Nov. 6 in The Californian, featuring a picture story of Wyndi, a local ballerina I used last year for our holiday fashion shoot and Mike, who's with the McCright Agency.

She ain't no hollaback girl.

IN OTHER NEWS: Who isn't coming ot Bakersfield in November? Rob Thomas, Earth Wind and Fire, Gwen Stefani, Jerry Seinfeld, Staind, P.O.D. and George Lopez are all stopping by next month ... The Syndicate on Eye Street is having its grand re-opening Oct. 28 with its new addition. I've already caught a glimpse of the gorgeous bar and that saltwater fishtank. Renee knows what she's doing, man. That place is going to be ... ahem ... off la chain ... Word on the street is local thesp David Zent was fired/let go/quit/walked away from the new Gaslight Melodrama in Rosedale. Rumor has it creative differences killed it. Either way, the Gaslight lives on. Zent's son-in-law Hal Friedman is directing David's production of Zorro which is now playing at the theater. I've also heard that David is looking to put together his Christmas show at the Best Western Hill House. What have you folks heard about David leaving?

Ah, brilliant. I love nothing but good naysaying and rumor mongering from anonymous sources.

Nice Anonymous, I think Bad Anonymous was just being, dare I say it, an ass.

That said, what's with all the anonymous people on my site? People are anonymous when the posts are nice. They're anonymous when they're nasty. What's up with that? Obviously, I have no problem with putting my name on anything and I can understand not wanting to throw yourself into some backbiting, ten-thousand year old gossip crap, but can't folks even just come up with a nickname?

Back to David. I heard it was artistic differences as well.

And people, please try to stick to recent news, not moldy, ten-thousand year old gossip. I mean, that gossip was old 'n' crusty. There was barnicles on it and everything. If you're just going to go around slandering people come up with some new crap.

    Thank you.

    Hi Guys...
Just thought I'd freshen the air a little bit. "Anonymous" was stinking up the internet with his/her B.S. again - that person seems to really get around, yeah? Where's the Glade?

As far as The Gaslight Melodrama goes, I would say my departure had to do with a lot of things - "creative differences" are certainly one element, as well as the incredible stresses that come with birthing any new business in general, and theatre in particular.

During the last year, my mom needed a lot of attention to survive her bout with stage four ovarian cancer, and a host of other family health problems were draining in every conceivable way. This took its toll on me mentally, spiritually and financially. The last half of 2004 and the first several months of 05 were pretty much the stuff of nightmares and I hope to not repeat anything like it soon.

Regardless, the Melodrama is up and running, and producer Arnie Carlos deserves your support, so get out there and throw your 15 bucks in the kitty for some outstanding entertainment by worthy performers.

For gossip-mongerers (you know who you are and I'm sure you enjoy every slur) there were undoubtedly things both the Melodrama producers and myself could have hashed out better between us, but didn't. There's LOTS of stuff I wish I had done better in every area of my life and I'm sure the same is true for you.

That's okay, I forgive you, so now maybe you can cut me some slack too. Life is a process and not a formula, so I will probably fail at some more things before I check out. Feel free to construct any scenario you desire (I've heard some lulu's) because I don't care; but if you're badmouthing out of your own personal unhappiness, be assured most people see that for what it is. You won't get any respect by slamming someone else to make yourself bigger, especially if you don't have the guts to step out and pursue your own calling. It shows.

As for me, it's back to the plan I had before the Melodrama detour. I'm calling it the Jewel Box Theatre Company, specializing in the romantic, comedic and musical (and sometimes a combination of all three). We're currently looking at three spaces to inhabit long-term, and the decor of the new building will be a mix of fairy-tale and shabby chic, with gold and jewel tones and saturated-color lighting, translucent gossamer fabrics and staging areas throughout the audience to draw them into the story. It's a fresh concept, at least for this town, and I think women especially will find it appealing and stimulating. Not that it's overly "girlie", but intimate and magical, with a feeling of long-ago-and-far-away; an adventure for both the cast and the audience, so that they want to come again and tell others. The goal is not to spend a lot of money renting sets or costumes, but to commit our time and talent as artists to create something that exists nowhere else.

The permanent space won't be a "dinner theatre", but food and beverages will be served from a cool-looking "snack bar" with an emphasis on healthier fare like turkey wraps, quiche, salads and the like, complimented by rich chocolate desserts and coffees. Again, stuff worth the money you'll spend on it.

My daily right hand in this project is Matt Swatzell, who has a well-reasoned and mature grasp of what such a venture requires; Matt grew up at the old Melodrama and kept his eyes open. We think alike in many ways and I'm really glad that he's participating.

Erica and Mike Briscoe are my creative partners and the Jewel Box Theatre could not be done without their input and talents, which are prodigious. They are exceptional collaborators.

Our current project is a Christmas dinner theatre opening Dec. 10 at the Hill House Best Western, across the street from the Beale Memorial Library. This particular production is a type of environmental dinner theatre, very audience inclusive, and will seat a hundred people. It's also a great family show, with a ton of funny stuff and great food too.

Well, I'm sorry if this is too long a post. As I said before, I will make many mistakes before I'm through but my hope is to do more things well than poorly. I quit listening to anonymous naysayers many years ago. I mean, really, do something positive for the world, will you?

Stride confidently in the direction of your own dreams. That is my plan and I encourage you all to do the same. Warm regards, David Zent

THIS IS IN RESPONSE TO WAT THE FIRST ANONYMOUS SAID. (that is, the second comment)

dude, whoever you are, that's low, spreading rumors on the net is just imature. no offence, but, seriously - don't make assumptions about ppl if you don't know them. get over it. don't play the teenage/high school rumor game.

Unfortunately, Zent has created for himself a "so-so" reputation in Bako's Lil Ol Theatre Community in the last several years. Personally, I've had negative experiences with him, but do not wish to execute myself by putting that bit of my life on a blog.
Who knows what exactly it was that caused his "melodramatic departure?" Rumors are rumors. I guess the only ones who know the truth are the ones involved. Have any of them been posting? Hmmmmm.
