Gumbeaux's going bye-bye? And other news ...

GUMBEAUX'S A-GO-GO-AWAY?: First PJ's Nite Club and now this? Mike Thibodeaux, say it isn't so? The Ragin' Cajun sent out an e-mail Saturday night saying that he's sold the restaurant and is asking friends and Gumbeaux's lovers to come out and eat to help him raise enough money just to pay off all the money he owes on the restaurant. It'll be Mike's place until Oct. 12 when the restaurant will be turned over to someone else.

In his e-mail Mike said, "I've sold the place and need money! I don't want to get into the gory details, but if you come by and buy dinner and drinks and love stories about people giving up everything to chase their dream, then I'll share them with you. So, please get all of your friends, family, clients and co-workers and bring them down to help me in my next venture, which at the time of this writing, is nothing. I owe lots of back taxes, rent and need all the help I can get to get me out of this jam. So please, please bring your wallets and your love down here and l'aissez les bon temps rouller (let the good times roll)!"

I know that Mike had been going through some rough times with his business. I hope he lands back on his feet. I'll, of course, let you know if I learn anything else.

Monty Byrom tears it up at Fishlips where he's performing Oct. 8.

THE NEW FISHLIPS: While Kip and Shawna are still running the place there are lots of changes going on at Fishlips, namely a big, fancy-schmacy remodel. I, personally, can't wait to check out the new place. And apparently, local favorite Monty Byrom will be breaking the new remodel in with a set of gigs this month, starting with one on my birthday Oct. 8th. (I'd be there, but I've already planned a little shindig for myself.) A matter of fact they're doing a ton of stuff at Fishlips post-remodel. Like this French Quarter Ball on Oct. 29 that involves costumes and such. To get the flyer, click here. Ms. M told me all about it as usual.

SURF 'N' TURF: ... Rumor has it that someone has bought out PJ's Nite Club and is working on turning the downstairs spot back into a hotspot ... And according to the word on the street, Phil of PJ's might have a new business partner and might be working on opening a new place ... Sunday night's at Al Rio on White Lane are gay friendly, people. If you were looking to expand your gay and lesbian friendly clubs outside of Club Paradise (soon to be Club 902), the Casablanca and, oddly enough, The Mint, this is your chance. If it's as cool as Saturday's hip hop night it should be sweet. Of course, I SAW a drag queen at a Saturday hip hop night. That was wild ... Ballet is going down at the Dore Theatre on Cal State Bakersfield's campus Oct. 8 at 1 p.m. and 8 p.m. Check it out ... And check out the musical "Grease" at the Harvey Auditorium Oct. 7 & 8 at 8 p.m. Tickets are $10 and it's fundraiser for the United Way. Give 'til it hurts people. Those kids didn't learn "Summer Nights" for nothing. For more info call Bakerfield Music Theatre at 325-6100 ... I'm writing the bio for the Soulsteppers new release. Yeah for me! ... And it's my birthday this Saturday. I'll be 28, ya'll. Once again, yeah for me ... I'll try to take lots of pictures ... Ciao, my little chile babies!

    Here's a thought, Gumbeaux's:

Drop your price from a whopping $9 to more like $4 for a plate of red beans and rice (which I could make at home for about $2 and it would taste just as good) and maybe you'd get more business.

Oh, and I should add this comment for Fishlips:

I sure hope your remodel includes a complete SERVICE makeover. After a recent TWO-HOUR wait for lunch, I vowed never to return to your establishment. You might make your restaurant look good, but unless you start treating your patrons with respect, you'll end up like Gumbeaux's: broke.
